St. George, Utah – Mason Derrick Esplin , 17 , passed away March 13th, 2020 from injuries sustained in a dirt bike accident on Saturday, March 7th.  Mason was born on October 30th, 2002 in Cedar City, Utah to Derrick Donald Esplin and Andrea Stacy Esplin.

He is survived by his parents and three siblings: Colin (15), Olivia (13) and Jemma (9). He is also survived by his grandparents Larry and Nancy Esplin (LaVerkin, UT) and Eric and Tamye McGarry (Yakima, WA) and his great-grandparents Ruth Esplin (St. George), Jane McGarry (Auburn, WA) and Dave and Mary Knapp (Graham, WA).

Mason was a kind, silly, tender-hearted boy and we will miss him so much! Mason was Junior at Crimson Cliffs High School. He loved dirt bike riding, snowboarding, skate boarding and hanging out with his friends. Some of his favorite things were cotton candy, Pepsi, sushi from Lin’s, animals, rainy days and traveling with his family. We are taking comfort in the fact that Mason spent his last waking day of life doing what he loved: sleeping in, hanging out with friends, and riding his dirt bike. Mason had such an amazing ability to connect with others that were struggling, and to be a light and a blessing to those that most needed a friend. Since his accident, we’ve seen how many people truly loved Mason and what a light and example he was to others.

A silver lining in this tragedy is that Mason chose to be an organ donor! When he filled out the paperwork for his driver’s license, he marked “yes” to organ donation. Mason was able to donate his heart, kidneys, lungs and liver, which means he will be able to save six lives. What a blessing this will be to those recipients that will receive a life saving gift from our son!

Due to the coronavirus, we’ve decided to forego the funeral that we had scheduled for Mason (note: we are still doing the two viewings). In lieu of the funeral, I’ve created a video memorial (essentially what I planned to say at his funeral) and here is the link to that video:

There will be a viewing for Mason on Friday, March 20th from 6 pm – 8 pm and  on Saturday, March 21st, from 9 am – 11:00 am.  The viewings will be held at Hughes Mortuary at 1037 E. 700 South in St. George, Utah.  Due to the threat of the coronavirus, we ask that when you get to the mortuary if you will follow the direction of the staff at Hughes Mortuary.  They will let you know when and how many can come in at a time.  Interment will take place in the Tonaquint Cemetery.
